On October 6-8, 2021 the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (the NSCMB FEB RAS) and the Primorsky Aquarium – Branch of the NSCMB FEB RAS will jointly hold an international scientific conference in Vladivostok, Russia "Marine Biology in the 21st Century: Achievements and Development Outlook (in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Academician Alexey V. Zhirmunsky)"

The conference will be held to mark the Year of Science and Technology in the Russian Federation (2021), the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (https://oceandecade.org/) , the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Marine Biology, now called the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology (2020) (http://www.imb.dvo.ru/index.php/en/we-are-50), and the 5th anniversary of the Primorsky Aquarium’s opening (2021). The conference aims to enhance scientific and professional contacts, to coordinate the development of marine scientific research and to increase the spread of knowledge on marine biology. The conference agenda is scheduled to include the following sessions:

  1.  History of marine biology research and establishment of the Institute of Marine Biology in Vladivostok;
  2. Marine ecology and functioning of ecosystems and communities, research on physiology and adaptationsof marine organisms;
  3. Biodiversity in coastal marine and deep-sea habitats;
  4. Molecular genetic and cytological research on marine organisms;
  5. Biochemistry, marine pharmacology and biotechnologies;
  6. Animal collection management, captive conservation, scientific research and environmental education in public aquariums.

The conference is expected to be attended – live or online - by leading Russian marine biologists and international scientists; if Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, the organizing committee will assist foreign participants in obtaining documents for entry into the Russian Federation. The session dedicated to the operation of public aquariums will be conducted at the Primorsky Aquarium.
